The good, the bad, the fabulous, and the flat worn out.

Bad News: BabyGirl has to have three fillings & sealants applied to two other teeth. The dental hygienist seemed a bit confused as to how these were missed at her last appointment (at a different dentists office). I'm a bit confused myself as the other doctor told me her teeth were perfect.

This news instigated The Great Dentist Hunt of 2009 part 2. We have a hard time finding a dentist that will take our secondary insurance. On x-rays, cleanings, and check-ups, it's no big deal. Our dental insurance covers that 100%. The rest is only covered 80%, so having the secondary is a big help. I thought the place we take B.B. would take her under the same conditions, but it turns out they can't accept our secondary insurance so they have to write off whatever our primary doesn't cover. They never explained that to me.

I finally found one....the first one B.B. saw when he flat refused to let anyone look in his mouth. So that's done & out of the way. Now I just have to get the x-rays sent over (unlike the other practice that has to have it's own set of x-rays).

Good News: #1 Son's teeth are just fine. Thank goodness!

Great News: Inkling, Henry David, and Grasshopper are boarding a plane in the morning to head to the land of the Red, White, and Blue! I'm on a countdown. 12 days (I think) until I get to meet Grasshopper in the flesh! Please pray for them as they have a 3 hour drive, & a cross country flight with a certain small person who's fond of pooping out the back of his diaper in massive ways (see, my blog always gets back to poop).

Now if only I could drag my butt out of this funk I'm currently lingering in. Maybe I stayed up too late last night (I couldn't sleep) and got up too early for our trip to the dentist, or maybe the adventuring of yesterday was too much for this homebody to handle, or maybe I'm physically manifesting my feelings about BabyGirl's impending dental work, or maybe I'm morphing into a slug, but I cannot work up any gumption today. I took a decent nap just before Husband left for work & now I'm trying hard to convince myself to dress the babies & meet the big kids at the bus stop for a walk or a romp in the yard.

Teeth, town, strange men, and dead fish

B.B. is doing well. Thank you all for asking. He has a small sore on the inside of his cheek from biting it while it was numb. He disagrees. "It's from the poky they gave me. It hurt. They put sleepy juice in my mouth." He's so proud of his Iron Man teeth.

I have no voice. The kids are loving it. It's making me crazy (note to self: when you cannot sing, do not listen to Mindy Smith. You will try to sing & it's not pretty).

BabyGirl & I went to town today after groceries. Wal-Mart was a mad house. Everyone in a 20 mile radius was in there!

When we got home, there was a strange man sitting in my recliner. No joke. Little BIL came up from KY for the day to visit & brought one of his Army buddies with me. It cracks me up when he brings someone home because they never know each other's first names. Little BIL introduced the buddy to me & I had to ask him to repeat the name thinking it was his first name. When Husband asked if it was, the buddy said no & told us his full name. Little BIL said, "Hm. Didn't know that." Then Husband said, "Did you know LB's name when you came in here? We've been saying it the whole time, but it never occurred to me that you wouldn't know it." He hadn't. Is this a normal occurrence in the military?

Oh, and we woke up this morning to a dead fish. Raphael bit the dust last night while we slept. B.B. was crushed. I could take him back to the pet store & get a new one, but I'm not driving 1 1/2 hours to exchange a $4 fish. I told B.B. he could flush him down the toilet & suddenly the tears stopped. Who knew flushing a fish could be so much fun?!

Lot 666, a day in pieces:

Some of you may recall the strange affair of the B.B. at the Dentist. A mystery never fully explained. We are told, Ladies & Gentlemen, that this is the very day which figured in the famous disaster....OK, that's as far as I can go with the whole Phantom of the Opera thing.

B.B. had a 10:15 appointment at a children's dental practice in E'ville today. It takes us an hour & 20 minutes to get there. This time I knew they could deal with his unwillingness to be examined & gas him if necessary (not the fatal kind, the laughing kind). Husband took a vacation day so he could go & help out if needed.

B.B. did pretty well with the cleaning....and then the bad news. Horrible news. News that made my stomach drop & left me fighting tears while talking to the hygienist. That poor kids has to have 8 crowns. EIGHT!! And that's not including the fillings needed in his front teeth. We knew his teeth were a mess, but this was beyond my imagination.

But there was good news. We have pretty good dental insurance. 2 free cleanings & one set of x-rays a year, a $50 deductible, and after that I think it's a 20% co-pay or less depending on the provider. But the amount of work B.B. needs done was going to cost us an arm & a leg. Our other option would be for me to drive him 2 1/2 hours north to have the work done (in the town where Aunt Anita's sister lives) at a branch of the same dental practice that will take our Medicaid card. We are very fortunate to have both insurance & Medicaid (it picks up what our insurance doesn't cover). But the place we went today doesn't take it.

I mentioned setting up the three appointments this would involve at the town 2 1/2 hours to our north & explained our issue to the hygienist we were working with. She said, "You have dental insurance & Medicaid as secondary? Let me talk to my office manager." She came back 2 minutes later & said they'd take it & they could start working on him immediately since a patient didn't show up. An hour & a nitrous oxide nap later he was crying his little heart out because his mouth was numb & it freaked him out, but the tough part was over.

B.B. is now the VERY proud owner of 3 "new metal teeth!!" just like Iron Man.

After that adventure we made a few more stops in the big city including one at the pet store. B.B. is now the proud father of three Beta fish named Leonardo, Raphael, and Marie. Don't worry, we'll keep the boys separate.

We got home 20 minutes before the big kids got off the bus.

I'm worn out. I have no voice. My kitchen is a mess. But I have a new purple denim jacket I picked up on clearance for $2.50. And now I am off to bed as soon as we're finished watching Mr.Bean's Holiday with BabyGirl. G'nite.

Riding the wave.

I feel good today. I feel really good. I am not in pain. I am not ill. My kids are playing outside in the sunshine. There's a little brunette with the prettiest blue eyes lounging on my lap, sucking her fingers & tugging at the damp hair curling around her ears.

We've been to a well baby check that went smashingly (Bitsy's in the 25th percentile for weight for her age and the 50th for height). Then off to Wal-Mart to spend some time before my dentist appointment. I picked up a new base for our Christmas tree for $3.75 and plastic tumblers for the FarmHands to use now that they're easing away from sippy cups for 4 for 50 cents.

The stitches came out of my mouth in seconds with no gagging. My doctor (have I mentioned that the first time I saw him he was wearing a Harley Davidson belt buckle & talking to a man from his church outside my exam room? I do really like my dentist. And that's seriously saying something for me) said the lingering numbness in my tongue & teeth is probably slight nerve damage & the feeling should return long before the estimated 6-12 months I'd heard.

After that we headed to the much anticipated Dairy Dee for ice cream & stuffed potatoes. When we drove up the parking lot looked horribly empty. That's when we noticed the ticker in front that read, "Closed for the Holidays. Will re-open Jan. 5." Boo! I was devastated (although I thought it was really awesome that they shut down so the teenagers that work there could spend the holidays & their school break being kids instead of working away at an ice cream place...don't even get me started on the movies being open on Christmas Day. We went one year & I felt horrible about it. Never again). Instead we headed to Hardee's for lunch.

I wasn't happy with the choice, but we didn't see any other fast food joints & needed to get back on the road. I grudgingly ordered a 1/3 lb. bacon cheese burger & can I just say, Oh. My. Word? That was a good burger!! I was shocked. I've never liked Hardee's. Haven't eaten at one in years & years. Now I'm wishing we had one close by! I even came home & emailed them to let them know how much I enjoyed my burger. You may call me a dork if you like. I won't hold it against you.

Now I have the day to pick up around the house, catch up on the chores that have been horribly neglected in the past 10 days, and look forward to a promised Family Date Night with Husband & all the FarmHands. Sometime this week we're going to go see The Tale of Despereaux at a matinee, then hit up Pizza Hut with the kids' Book-It certificates, and drive through the park to see the Christmas lights before they come down.

It's been a good way to start the week.

Christmas Dinner...two days late.

Today is the first day since last Friday that I've felt human & whole all day long. I was so ready for it! MIL watched the older kids this morning so Husband & I could go to the grocery. We came home & played & watched movies & went out to run around in the 70 degree weather (yikes!!) & I finally got around to making the dinner I'd planned for Christmas Day. I roasted a chicken & made mashed potatoes, green beans, & sweet corn. B.B. has discovered the wide world of meat lately & was desperate for chicken. I cut some up & put it on his plate. "Yum! I love this chicken, Mom! Even the peel of the chicken is good!"

Now I'm attempting to email all the pictures from our Christmas with Uncle Bubba yesterday to QM & Daddy so everyone can see them tonight at Christmas at their house. I've tried twice only to have the emails fail on me. Grrr.

The FarmHands got quite a haul for Christmas this year. Sheets or a blanket for each kid & a big box of books, coloring books, card games, and little toys from MIL & FIL, toys, toys, and more toys from Husband & me, Indiana Jones Whips for the boys, a Cabbage Patch Preemie for Bitsy, and a Fancy Nancy doll for BabyGirl from Uncle Bubba & Aunt Beck, Bibles, a movie, and a shopping cart for Bitsy from Grammy & Pa, and lots of movies and books and other goodies.

Princess sent me two wonderful pairs of jeans (I love having a sister who works at Macy's...$88 jeans for $10). Bubba gave me the Indiana Jones trilogy & The Last Unicorn on DVD and a wonderful smelling bath set Beck picked out. QM & Daddy sent me some fabulous new kitchen knives that I threatened to use on Husband should he ever try to butcher a chicken with them.

Christmas has been good...and bad...and tiring...and difficult...and wonderful. But then things are usually like that around here.

Tomorrow night is our Candle Light Service at church. Uncle E called tonight to ask if I'd sing a special. I said yes. Now I have to find one to sing!

Monday I'm going to have my stitches taken out of my mouth. I am so ready for it! I've been done with these stupid things for three days now...unfortunately, they aren't done with me. It will be good to get that much closer to normal.

At some point I'd like to take the FarmHands to see Desperaux.

That's all the news that's fit to print.

Ask FarmWife: Christmas Edition

I am pleased to report that the swelling is indeed coming down a bit today. The bruising has started so I look like I've been punched in the mouth, but it's not really that bad. And because the pain is pretty well gone (except the stiffness in my jaw) I'm off my pain meds meaning I'm not loopy & dizzy. At least not in a way I can blame on drugs.

And Christmas is very quickly approaching. The FarmHands have 2 days of school left. Today is BabyGirl's Christmas party & tomorrow is the annual Christmas talent show (read: time waster for last day of school) & #1 Son's party.

In the spirit of the season today will be a holiday version of Ask FarmWife. So, what do you want to know about Christmas, our traditions, the history of a particular Carol, my thoughts on Macy's commercials? Ask away!

December 21, 2008

I wonder....

What does it mean if you're on one medicine that causes constipation & another that causes diarrhea? Do they cancel each other out or do you just have diarrhea twice a week?

I'm wondering if my face will stop swelling sometime soon, or if it will keep growing like Violet Beaureagard on Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. (OK, so it's not that bad, but I am getting an idea of what I would look like if I gained some weight somewhere other than in my abdomen.) I'm waiting on the Oompa-Loompas to pop out from under the couch & start singing something about mothers on vicoprofin.
Finally, a brief word on gag reflexes. On Friday I discovered that it is possible to muscle past your gag reflex if necessary...like when you're walking through Wal-Mart waiting for your scripts to be filled. Gauze in the back of my mouth is not my friend & there were more than a few times I thought clean up would have to be called to aisle whatever.

A plea for mercy

Wanna' hear something fan-freaking-tastic? All four of the FarmHands have pink eye. Wait, it gets better. Bitsy & B.B. have ear infections. Nope, there's still more. BabyGirl & #1 Son have "red, pussy throats." Oh, and I forgot to mentiong the puking...Bitsy. And it terrfies her as she's never puked before. All this the day before I go have three teeth ripped from my head.

I love being me.

In good news, I've finished all the tasks I laid out for myself prior to my dental work. I need to fold some laundry and do a few dishes tonight, wrap 4 gifts, charge my Zune & I'm done. If you want to see the accidental pillow I made for Bitsy, you'll have to click on the link in my side bar & go see it on Nudge-Nudge. I'm too tired to link today.

I hope your day has been nicer than mine. Please, tell me something nice and happy and funny. I need it.

****Updated at 7:40 pm.****

BabyGirl started puking at 7 o'clock tonight. Joy. Is it too early for me to start popping pain pills? (I'm kidding, I'm kidding....mostly.)

FarmWife Answers

Welcome back all my answer seeking darlings! I have wisdom to spread. Pull up a monitor & prepare to be amazed.

Inkling asks (even though she later said I am not required to answer): Is it sacrilegious to have roast chicken on Thanksgiving?

No. Not at all. I think Grandpa M&M would be thrilled with the idea...not that Grandpa M&M is God & has a say in all things sacrilegious or anything....but he is an Elder at the church...and he does pray at every family meal, so I'm pretty sure he knows a thing or two about God's feelings on turkey.

Then she gets evil with me & queries: If you did find out your doctor didn't truly know how to tie knots....1. what would you name child #5, and 2. how much would your lawsuit request, and 3. what would you do with it (you must include a visit to Canada)

#1. I've always wanted to name a baby girl Keturah or Tirzah but would have to be a single mother to be allowed to & I'm not willing to off my husband just to win the baby name argument. And I've always wanted to name a baby boy Nathanial or Matthias. But none are reason enough to procreate again!
#2. Enough to supply me with an apple green Kitchen Aid Mixer, Sun room, 3 more bed rooms, a 2 car garage with bonus room, my own ATV, and maid & nanny service for life....plus a stipend for Spa Days.
#3. Oh, I think I just answered my own question. I'll throw in a Daudi House (a mother-in-law suite), yearly plane tickets to anywhere I want to visit (Canada being first on my list), and enough money for Husband to become a Kept Man (think Mark Consuelos...aka Mr. Kelly Rippa).

Kork asks a tough one that many many mothers have to face in their lifetime: How, precisely do you tell your MIL to butt out when you're having a disciplinary session with your 29 month old son? How do you explain to said son that Grandma has WAAAAAYYYYY different rules than at home, and to "buck up little camper" because we'll be home soon enough and he can rule the roost once again?

I've honestly not had this issue arise with my MIL, but I don't spend a great deal of time around her. I have had to deal with it with my SIL (who has mental problems) and it wasn't pretty. It went something like:
Me-Please let me handle this.
Her- (still trying to discipline my child)
Me- That's it. Stop now. I am ____'s mother & I will take care of it.
Her- Mom! You make that B___ shut up now! Mom!! You better do something about her now!
Me- (walk out with my children in tow)

Now that that's over, I know you cannot have a row over this because you're staying at her house. I do have to agree with Gail & say to Captain Chaos, "Grandma's house. Grandma's rules. Our house. Our rules." I know at just over 2 years old this isn't an easy concept to grasp, but he's bright. I'm sure he'll figure it out before time to board the plane for home!

As far as how to handle your MIL, I would, in my best Mommy's-the-boss voice that I use with my children say, "Thanks. I've got him. This will only take a minute," and take him in the next room if necessary. Be gracious & calm and remember, you will soon be back in your own nest. If it becomes a real problem, my rule is His mom, his battle. Tell B.B. what's going on & that you expect him to handle it so you don't have to be the bad guy.

Zann asks: Is there any way to cook a whole small roasting chicken (bones and all that) in a crockpot?

I can't say I've ever tried to cook a chicken in the crock-pot unless I was cooking it down to use in another recipe. That's how I cook my chickens for chicken pot-pie or chicken & noodles. But I do have a Fix It and Forget It cook book (I highly recommend this for anyone who uses their crock pot frequently).

Here's one that sounds good:

Chicken in a Pot

2 carrots, sliced
2 Onions, sliced
2 celery ribs, cut in 1 inch pieces
3 lbs. Chicken, whole or cut up
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp coarse black pepper
1 tsp dried basil
1/2 C. water, chicken broth, or white cooking wine

Place veggies in bottom of slow cooker. Place Chicken on top of veggies. Add seasoning & water.
Cover. Cook on low 8-10 hours or High 3 1/2 to 5 hours (use 1 C. liquid if cooking on high). If cooking as a full meal, add 2 med. sized quartered potatoes to veggies before cooking.

iVillage has a crock pot section you might find useful: http://food.ivillage.com/cooking/slowcooker/0,,9wqt,00.html

Zann also asks: What's a yummy but healthy cookie recipe?

This is not my area of expertise. Inkling may have something up her sleeve on this one, but I personally am a butter & sugar kind of gal. The more of both, the better. I'm currently attempting to eat an entire batch of chocolate chip cookies by myself.

I'm also a fan of persimmon cookies. Uncle E & Aunt C make them & they're wonderful. I don't have their recipe, but this one looks yummy. Do you have persimmons near you?

I googled Healthy Cookie Recipes & was lead to a blog with a wonderful recipe on it. I really think you should give it a try & let us all know how it turns out. It looks fabulously decadent, but chocked full of good stuff.

That's it for the questions today. So now onto what I have accomplished today (you knew I'd get to that didn't you?).

By 9 o'clock I had loaded & run the dish washer & washed all the big stuff by hand, stripped the boys beds & had the washer going, vacuumed half the living room & had husband move the furniture back onto it (we shampooed half the carpet yesterday), vacuumed the other half & shampooed the carpet on the empty side. I have to finish with the bedding & wipe down the bathroom. The kitchen floor could use a quick sweep & then I plan on finishing the ornament I'm cross stitching for Grandma M&M's tree. After that I'll veg out with Little Women or what ever Netflix sends in the mail today (yes, we subscribed. Husband couldn't deal with the no TV thing & 75% our DVD's are animated).

Oh, and in wonderfully fabulous news, my dental insurance approved the removal of my other three wisdom teeth. So December 19th I'll be having 2 more pulled & the one impacted tooth cut out. Yeah me. But, Husband will be off work from then until after the first of the year, so I can lay around with my ice packs, pain killers, and creamy tomato soup.

Ask FarmWife Day.

I'm still working on that button....rather unsuccessfully I might add. The tutorial Needlefinger's gave me the link to is super easy, but apparently I'm image retarded & cannot get the stoopid thing to work for me. Anyone want to offer their services?

I'm feeling rather embarrassed now. T Moss asked (last week) when to submit Ask FarmWife questions & I never answered. Sorry. Today's the day. Generally, Monday is ask FarmWife Day, but if you have a question mid-week, ask away & I'll try to work it in between dishes & diaper changes.

Zann got a jump start on Ask FarmWife Day when she asked: We think K may be teething as well. She's been slobbery for a good two weeks, loves to chew on my arm, her hand, my finger, the cold teether..etc. and it's chewing not sucking. And up until today that's all it was, just slobber and chewing, but today good golly she's been fussy, and barely napping. She's only 3 mo. old though. Is it possible that she's teething? Can they do that this young? And if so what can I do about it, the oragel says not to use it until 4 mo? In desperation we gave her a tiny dose of infant Tylenol, and she has at least stopped screaming now. Do you think we did the right thing?

First of all, yes, you did the right thing. If she's comfortable & you're getting the break you need, do not beat yourself up over a half a mil. of Tylenol.

Secondly, at three months you probably won't see a tooth erupt, but they may be budding under her gums. She may have one pop up soon, but it's not real common for them to erupt this young (that being said, there have been babies born with full sets of teeth in their mouths...keep that in mind, Inkling!). So yes, you can rack this all up to teething even if you don't see a tooth for 6 more months. It comes & goes.

Thirdly, other options if you don't want to go the Tylenol route: give K a cold wet rag to chew on. That will help ease the pain. Some folks put them in the freezer, but my kids never wanted frozen rags. Stock up on teething toys that are nubby (I love One Step Ahead). BabyGirl had a yellow star that was nubby, rubbery, and vibrated. She LOVED it. But she also cut one of her first teeth on a fake credit card. It looked just like a regular credit card, but was one of those things they send in the mail to try & reel you in. She'd chew on the numbers.

But I swear by Hyland's Teething Tablets. Husband's cousin gave me two of them one Sunday afternoon at their Grandma's house. B.B. was about 14 months old & would not stop crying. He wallowed all over me, screamed, cried, bit, fussed...he was horrible. It was VERY unlike him. Jules asked me if I'd ever used them & I said I'd never heard of them. She gave me two & said to just sneak them in his mouth. They dissolve instantly. 10 minutes later I had a different child. He was so happy & played the rest of the afternoon. They come 250 to a bottle, so we're only about 1/3 of the way through the bottle I bought for B.B. Bitsy's been getting them all weekend. She's having sympathy teething pain for K.

Good luck, Zann! I hope K gets back to her normal happy self very soon!

And at the risk of sharing Too Much Information, if you have not taken the Activia Challenge, do so immediately. Unless of course you are as regular as Old Faithfull naturally or are already doing Kefir shots every morning.

Now it's your turn. What do you want to know?

NaBloPoMo....as though I need a nudge in this direction.

There's this whole NaBloPoMo thing going on this month. For those of you not in the know, that stands for National Blog Posting Month. All you have to do is post for a month. They have their own web site & ev'r thin'. To be honest, I think NaBloPoMo is kind of pointless for me since I pretty much post daily if not multiple times a day, but hey, I'm game. Besides, Mrs.X thinks the world might cease to turn if I don't post. Secretly I agree with her.

I've been trying to sign up at NaBloPoMo, but so far, no luck. Oy. OK, never mind. I did it. Yeah me!

Either Bitsy is teething or she's becoming Darth Vader's Padawan learner. She's cranky & not sleeping & mad & not sleeping & drooly & not sleeping & yelling at everyone & have I mentioned she's not sleeping? It's loads of fun. Let me tell you.

Oh well. I'm off. Time for church. Have a rockin' Sunday, y'all!

S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night!

No, I'm not doing anything exciting tonight to warrant that title. I just felt like using it today.

Still no pain. My gums are a tad tender around the area where my tooth was, but not so much that it deters me from sticking my tongue back there repeatedly. I have had to stop myself a few times as I reached for the Flip Side pretzel crackers. Dr.K made me promise to wait at least a week before indulging in the crunchy.

At the moment I think I'm nursing a bit of a head cold. Bitsy's got a runny nose & a drainage cough. My nose is getting drippy & the Zyrtec I took at 4:30 this morning isn't helping much. Oy.

In fabulous news, I didn't get out of bed until almost 9:30 this morning. Bitsy did not sleep well last night. She tossed & turned & cried & eventually had to be brought out of the bedroom to roam sleepily around the living room before falling asleep on the couch. It was not fun. When she was back up & fussing at 7 this morning, I just turned her loose & went back to sleep. After a few minutes Husband decided leaving her & her siblings unattended wasn't a good idea, so he got up & took care of them (not in the mobster sense of the phrase although I think at one point he was tempted). Over the course of the next 2 hours I was repeatedly awakened by BabyGirl & Husband arguing. BabyGirl had major att-it-tude this morning.

Currently the boys are getting dressed to go out & run around in the fresh air. Bitsy's napping & BabyGirl is vegging out in front of Sleeping Beauty. I need to tackle the laundry (Grammy brought the boys new underpants & they need them, now!). Maybe when QM gets here I'll take her to the Amish store down the road & we can look for wedding present ideas for Bubba & Bec.

Fun stuff & no pain

If you scroll down beneath my list of blogs I read you'll find a new widget. I came across it on The Secret Life of an Unknown Housewife & fell in love. Click on the box & it will open & give you choices. After choosing a few options you will be directed to a new blog. Some I've found were awesome. Some, not so much. You can also put in choices of your own to send traffic to your blog. Try it out!

In other news, I'm tired & a bit grumpy this morning, but there's no real pain to speak of. My jaw is a tad stiff & a tiny bit sore if I open it all the way & there's a weird hole in the back of my mouth, but no swelling or bruising or anything of the like.

All I can say is that the Lord answers prayer! And I get free time with my mom! Maybe we should find a baby sitter & the two of us could head out for a girls' day.... :) (Don't tell Daddy or he'll want me to send her home!)

October 30, 2008

I will survive.

It's over. Sort of. Dr.K only took out the tooth with the missing filling that's giving me so much trouble. He didn't see the need to take out the bottom two that are fully erupted (which was my thought to begin with, but my last Dentist, Dr.T, is anti-wisdom tooth & was determined to have them all ripped out). Dr.K said since the bottom ones were recently filled (like 2 years ago) and insurance does not like to pay to have recently filled teeth removed if there's not good reason, he'd take x-rays, send them off to insurance & see if they'd approve the extractions before he started pulling. The top right tooth is impacted & coming in sideways. He said it looked OK for now so we're just going to wait to see what insurance has to say about it too.

The one with the missing filling (top left) had to come out, so he numbed me up and pulled it. The extraction took all of about 15 seconds.

Right now my jaw aches a bit & my mouth feels odd. The numbness has worn off & I've taken my first pain pill. I've also attempted to eat everything in the house...OK, so mashed potatoes, yogurt, and ice cream, but I may head back in for some tomato soup soon. I'm so stinking hungry! Weird.

So as it stands, there was lots & lots of nervousness & build up for nothing. Thank the Lord.

I'm Ready! I'm Ready! I'm Ready! *Updated*

For those of you with small children obsessed with Spongebob, you know exactly how to read that title. For those of you unfamiliar with Spongebob, count your lucky stars!

Husband and I hit the grocery early this week so I don't have to send him alone or try to go while doped up on painkillers. I am now well supplied with homemade applesauce, vanilla ice cream (I was going to get some Ben & Jerry's but then I realized I wouldn't want to chew up the chocolate chunks. Bummer), lots of soups, yogurt, pudding, jell-o, oatmeal, cranberry jelly, potatoes to mash, and eggs to scramble not to mention enough ibuprofen to knock out a small horse, tea bags to pack in my gums in place of the gauze (a hint from the nurse of an oral surgeon) ,Carmex (dental work does nasty things to my lips), and alcohol to make ice packs with (a tip from someone on a mothering message board. You take 1 C. water & 1 C. rubbing alcohol & mix them together in a zip-lock bag & freeze. The alcohol keeps it from freezing solid so you get a nifty gel ice pack like you buy at a medical supply place. I'm trying it now. I'll tell you how it works later). My Zune is charged & I have a special play list made to keep my thoughts positive & prayerful. Directions to the office are printed & ready to go. Busha will be here just after 8 tomorrow morning to drive me. QM will be here maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow before Husband leaves for work. I. Am. Ready.

I forgot to mention that I voted today. I am now allowed to complain & gripe for the next 4 years if I don't agree with what the president does. If you don't vote, I don't think you have the right to complain.

I also stocked up on food that Husband can prepare with little to no effort so my children don't starve. OK, so QM will be here & she can cook, but I wanted to be ready anyway. Then when she goes home I can still take it easy for a while...like the next month or two.

The Wisdom of Teeth

Every Sunday morning after Sunday School, one of the men of the church gets up & asks if there are any announcements or prayer requests from the congregation. I've mentioned in the past that we are a very small congregation. This becomes even more apparent during prayer request time. "So & So is in the nursing home." "Who's that?" "You know, she's ____'s sister. Used to teach grade school when we were little." "Oh you mean the one that lives in X's old house." "Yes, that's the one." There's also a bit of joking that goes on.

This morning Uncle E announced that he's having the staples removed from his shoulder on Thursday. Remember, he fell out of the cherry tree this summer & broke his ribs & collar bone? Well, the collar bone separated & there was muscle wedged between the ends of the bone. Two weeks ago he had it repaired & he's currently sporting 20 staples across his shoulder & collar bone. When he said that, Mr.M, who was leading prayer time, jokingly said, "Oh boy. That's gonna' hurt E. They just yank them out! That's what they did to my knee." Mr.M had his knee replaced last fall. Uncle E laughed & said, "Thanks for the encouragement!"

Then I announced that I was having my wisdom teeth taken out on Thursday. Mr.M said, "Oh! That's gonna' hurt too!" To which I replied, "Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it!" A few minutes later, Gary, our preacher, got up to start his sermon. As he began, he mentioned the prayer requests saying, "Some are recovering from illnesses and surgery. Some are having staples taken out or wisdom teeth taken out. I could tell you a story about when I had mine out when I was 14." And I interrupted him (not something you can do in a large congregation) and said, "I don't want to hear it!" He laughed & said he'd save his story for next week.

After services Gary caught me in the back of the church & teased me about it a little more. I told him I've heard nothing but horror stories lately. Then he gave me a hug & laughed & said he was sorry. He did tell me his wisdom tooth was underneath another molar that was impacted, so it wasn't a normal extraction.

Last night I was laying in bed worrying about this (really, I have a one track mind) when I decided there's no sense in worrying. It won't change a thing. It will make me ill & anxious & angry all week. Who's that going to help? So I've decided instead to pray really specifically because it will serve a much better purpose than worrying.

If you'd like to pray along with me, this is what I'll be praying for:

  • an easy removal of the teeth

  • that I will be relaxed & deal with the procedure very well (I do not like to have anything done to my teeth & I have a horrible gag reflex)

  • fast healing (no dry sockets, no major problems)

  • minimal pain

  • a peaceful recovery (including that my children will behave themselves for their Grammy so I can rest)

  • that I won't loose any weight while my eating is restricted (I know, not your typical request, but it is a concern for me)

  • that I won't have a lot of pain between now & Thursday (it's kind of a dull, small ache most of the time. Tylenol & Motrin are handling it most of the time)

And I'm endeavoring not to worry. AND I'll try to blog about something other than my wisdom teeth.

Note to self:

When waiting for any type of medical procedure, do not go looking for info on it on the Internet or ask a question about recovery time on a message board unless you are prepared to hear the absolute worst. Please, someone, tell me that having all 4 wisdom teeth removed while awake with only local anesthesia will be OK. Please. Anyone. NOW!

I need to revisit my list of happy things before I puke due to nerves.

Tonight is BabyGirl's debut as a cheer leader. Last night she came home with her cheer camp t-shirt, Mardi Gras beads in the school colors, pom-poms, and instructions to wear black shorts with her shirt for the game tonight. Um. She doesn't own black shorts. And we live in the middle of no where. If Wal-Mart doesn't have any, we're up a creek. Daddy asked if we had a sporting goods store in town. I just laughed at him. Luckily Wal-Mart had one pair of black shorts in her size. Now I have to convince her that they'll be OK even though they have a butterfly printed on the leg. Maybe I'll just take them into school when I pick her up & show them to her teacher so she can give BabyGirl the official OK (since I have no idea what I'm talking about...ever...just ask my daughter).

I was worried that I'd have to get a pattern & fabric & whip out a pair of shorts on my sewing machine today. I'm not good with deadlines that fall into the "hours" category.

I think I need a nap to prepare for the excitement.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, my tooth isn't hurting all the time. In fact, it didn't bother me at all yesterday until after 8 pm. I'm hoping it stays that way. I can deal with occasional pain. It's the chronic stuff I don't do so well with.

If it makes me happy

Mrs.X asked what makes us happy today. Since I was bummed out last night, I thought this might be a good exercise for me. So here we go (in no particular order):
  • My decision that the weaning shall be a day time thing only. Bitsy can still nurse at bed time & through the night if she likes. Turns out the pain killers won't hurt her. I feel good about this.
  • Darvocet. Don't worry. It's only the second one I've taken in three days & I only take them at night...and then only one (the script says one to two every four to six hours).
  • Knowing this tooth mess will all be over by this time next week...well, most of it.
  • Knowing my mom will be here to chase the FarmHands so I can lay on the couch & eat squishy things.
  • Bitsy & B.B. were funny all morning today.
  • #1 Son looks so cute with his umbrella.
  • BabyGirl is loving Cheer Camp.
  • Tonight at dinner we played best/worst. Each kid told their favorite part of the day & their least favorite. BabyGirl said she loved the entire day (she probably forgot the battle to get out the door dressed in something other than shorts this morning).
  • I got a good chunk of my chores done today including cleaning BabyGirl's bed room (for which she was very grateful).
  • I got to talk to Inkling on the phone & she had good news to share. She passed her glucose test today!
  • I put my wedding band & engagement ring back on tonight (I'd been wearing my other band for the past 2 weeks), & it's very sparkly.
  • The election is in a few weeks, so the ads will be coming to an end!!
  • Someone may come buy the last pup this weekend.
  • It's raining today. We needed the rain to beat down the dust.
  • My new Eden Pure heater.
  • I'm going to bed in just a minute to ride the wave of warm fuzzies this Darvocet has given me.

Good night, all. I hope something made you happy today.

October 22, 2008

Join me in my pity party.

I am having my wisdom teeth removed next Thursday. Yes, one week from tomorrow. I am not excited about it at all. I am excited about the prospect of the icky things being gone. I am not excited about the process.

Because of the pain meds I plan on relying on after the removal of afore mentioned teeth, I am now officially weaning Bitsy. Because of that decision I am so very very sad.

Don't get me wrong. I am completely comfortable in my decision to wean her. I do not want to be recovering from my tooth extraction & still comfort nursing the baby. I do not want to risk her ingesting what ever pain killers I happen to be on. I was not happy about the Darvocet I took last night to get rid of the horrible pain & allow me to sleep, but since it was prescribed by my OB after I had her (knowing I was breast feeding), I figured it was my safest bet.

Knowing she's my last makes this doubly hard. I weaned BabyGirl the night I found out I was pregnant with #1 Son because I knew breast feeding causes contractions. When you're newly pregnant that poses a (very small) risk to the baby. I knew the risk was small, but since it took so long to get pregnant with BabyGirl, I was terrified to do anything to risk losing baby number two. #1 Son was gradually weaned because my milk was drying up due to stress (G'ma M&M had a stroke when he was little), and I was worried about losing as much weight nursing him as I did nursing BabyGirl (I hit 88 lbs with her). B.B. was weaned at 17 months because I was ready to try for baby number four.

This time it's much harder than I expected it to be. I cried when I got home from buying my cabbage (to help with the drying up process & to prevent engorgement). I'm not sure if we're going to do this cold turkey or not, but I do know it has to happen fairly quickly. I think that may be what's best for both of us. I'd let her nurse until she starts school if left to my own devices, but only because she's my last baby. She'd nurse until she stars school out of boredom or for comfort.

Now I'm just tired & depressed & I want my mama...and to keep my teeth.

We gonna' rock down to.....

My fabulous friend Mrs.X (yes, she pays me to say that) had this awesome Music Meme thing on her blog that goes by the year you graduated. Apparently she's even more fabulous than I thought since we not only graduated the same year, but she's also a bicentennial baby just like yours truly!

So, here's the deets:

A.) Go to musicoutfitters.com

B.) Enter the year you graduated from high school in the search function and get the list of 100 most popular songs of that year.

C.) Bold the songs you like, strike through the ones you REALLY hate.

And because this blog is mine & I can do what I durn well please, I will add my own comments about the songs as I see fit, so there, pbth.

This is when I must admit to an unhealthy love of pop music. My true love was alternative rock and the like (think The Cure, Pearl Jam, The Pixies, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, They Might Be Giants, Tori Amos, Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam, 10,000 Maniacs...Have I mentioned I love Pearl Jam?), but I could totally rock out to Ace of Base while hiding in my room with the curtains drawn. Sorry, y'all. I'm just being honest. Like you didn't already suspect that, what with my mild obsession with NKOTB.

So, without further ado, here are your top 100 songs from 1994:

1. The Sign, Ace Of Base

2. I Swear, All-4-One

3. I'll Make Love To You, Boyz II Men (This song makes me shudder. I had just broken up with my boyfriend of 3 years when a friend of mine told me he had something for me & would I meet him out at his buddy's car after play practice. As I was waiting for QM to come pick me up {yes, I was 18 with no driver's license} he held my hands, gazed deeply into my eyes, & sang this song to me while the friend who owned the car sang back up for him. It was massively uncomfortable for both me & the poor friend singing back up. When he was done singing I said thank you, walked away & never mentioned it to him again. Over the course of the summer he declared his undying love to most of my girl friends.)

4. The Power Of Love, Celine Dion

5. Hero, Mariah Carey

Again, makes me want to watch Reality Bites...but I had a friend in my first period choir class who felt the need to sing this to me every. stinking. morning. I can't help but sing along, but deep down inside, there's a 17 year old dying to strangle some tall brunette boy.)

67. Never Keeping Secrets, Babyface

68. Crazy, Aerosmith (I didn't realize until recently that I have a HUGE thing for Aerosmith. Odd. I never thought I liked them. I can't stand to watch Steven Tyler sing....)

Ahhh...now I must plug in my Zune & listen to Eddie Vedder sing Jeremy.

In case you're still interested in my coat issues, I will not be disposing of my school jackets or the leather jacket. I was considering selling the leather on eBay, but Husband thinks I should keep it for #1 Son should he ever want to be a greaser. If so, I will stop referring to him as #1 Son and begin referring to him as Ponyboy. The Carhart has to be kept so I have something to wear when I have to help Husband outside & don't want to ruin my cute coats. Everything else can go to the Salvation Army or Goodwill.

The new coat will be purchased in part with my Target gift card from the Hot Mama Revolution $25 shopping spree challenge. See, now don't you wish you'd have entered?

Now I'm off to try to find an oral surgeon that will take our insurance so I can get these stinking wisdom teeth cut out. I was up in the middle of the night with a horrible toothache & ended up taking pain killers left from my c-section because the Motrin didn't touch it. Grrrr.
