Butter knives & the unfairness of the first grade

After Husband fixed the holes in the dry wall yesterday, everything was much calmer around here. For a while.

Husband went to get #1 Son from school, then came home & did chores. After chores, he went to take a shower & I heard him scream from the bathroom. I knew something was not good.

The boys wanted to know what that white stuff was on the bathroom walls. So while I was nursing Bitsy, they took plastic butter knives & dug into the wet Spackle. Not a good idea. Their dad was not happy with them at all.

When he patched it the second time, we locked the bathroom & left it locked until after bedtime.

Today was the awards ceremony at school. I took BabyGirl & #1 Son to school & stayed to watch. Husband stayed home with B.B. since he had to work until 2:30 this morning. BabyGirl didn't get any awards. There were only 3 different awards given in her class...Spelling (missed less than 3 words all year long), attendance (missed less than 3 days all year long), and Citizenship (given to one boy & one girl from each class).

After the ceremony, I went to ask her if she wanted her dad to bring her different clothes for Field Day (she insisted on a skirt & Crocs, I figured after seeing everyone else in play clothes & mud boots, she'd want to change...but not my girl). I asked her & she shook her head no, but never picked her head up. When I asked her what was wrong, she started sobbing. "I didn't get an award, Mommy. I tried my best. I really did. But I didn't get any awards at all." I hugged her & told her it was OK. Not everyone got an award. That didn't change how proud I was of her & that I knew she worked VERY hard this year.

I so wanted to scoop her up & hold her until her tears were spent, but her class was already leaving. So I kissed her goodbye & headed to town. I hope Field Day wiped away her tears. I'm pretty sure it did.
