It's Just Not Fair!

I got apple fritters from the bakery (if you can call it that) at Wal-Mart. They had them 2 for $1 or a box of 6 for $2...I sprung for the box of 6. They looked and smelled so good. I haven't had one in forever. I was hungry. So I ate one in the van on the way home. Can I just say, "don't bother?"

When I was a little girl there was a donut shop not far from our house called Royal Donut (Grace, it was the same one your dad went to since it was the closest to our house too). Daddy would get up early on special Sunday mornings to get a dozen or so for breakfast. You had to get there early because those were the days when old men could still hang out in the donut shop drinking their coffee and chain smoking all morning. If you got there early enough, you could get your pastries without nicotine...if you waited too long, you'd better like your cruller to taste like unfiltered Camels.

Daddy always brought home an assortment including at least 2 apple fritters. One for him and one for me. We would eat them slowly, comparing how many pieces of real apple we found in our fritters. As the years passed, the apple pieces seemed to get fewer and farther between. After today, I wonder if they even use apples in the fritters. Maybe they still do at Royal Donut, but Wal-Mart doesn't feel the need to. Daddy, I had NO APPLES in my fritter!

I think I'll eat some Sweet Tart jelly beans and pout...

I sympathize with the loss of your apples. Did you know that my 6'5" cousin (yes, we are related in real life) secretly dreams of purchasing that place? He loves that spot, and told me over the phone at Christmas that if he could do anything for a living it would be to own and run that place. And I'm sure he'd put lots of apples in the fritters, even if it made him go bankrupt. He's just that generous kind of a guy.

I remember those mornings too. Before we moved from that town to the little town 20 minutes away, we lived about 3 minutes from the Royal Donut across from the community college. Dad and I would go in and get donuts. I remember looking thru the glass and seeing those amazing cakes they always had. I always got the same thing.... Angel icing bismark covered with powdered sugar. YUM!
Just the smell of that place is awesome.

When we moved here, we discovered an awesome, privately owned little donut shop across from the church. The owner gets there around 2 am, makes his donuts, opens around 5 am and closes when all the donuts are gone for the day. They cost a little more than Walmart and you have to be there by about 7:00 in the morning or they're all gone, but they are soooooo totally worth it. They have wonderful angel-icing and their apple-fritters are to-die for.... although I've never counted the apple-pieces in them... the thought never occurred to me. They are the size of my two hands side by side!! That's usually one of Prophet's regular Saturday morning orders!!

Krispy Kreme in my opinion really stinks. They're too small, they're expensive, and they don't have enough special donuts. Krispy Kreme ain't got nothin' on the smaller guys as far as I'm concerned!!

I may have to make a special trip to Danville to "bring back the memories" or apple fritters as the case may be. I ahve had the dissapointing WalMart experience as well. Like eating a stage prop. All looks and no flavor. Thanks for the memories!

Mel-o-Cream in Lincoln

He made the best. But you had to get there early to because of smoke.

Cream puffs and Coke what a breakfast.

Porter's Orchard in Goodrich, MI had the best cake donuts and fresh cider that I remember ever having. Krispy Creme are sweet, but I'll take a hearty homemade donut anyday. Kinda like I'll take Tech Mom's home ground coffeed over starbuck's.

mmmm... fresh, hot apple cider donuts smothered with cinnamon sugar from the farmstand at an orchard with a cup of fresh cider, smelling the fall air and picking your own pumpkins..... sounds like fun!!

Okay for the record Krispy Cream is yucky, that weirdo after taste that never goes away til you brush... there is a little place in Mukilteo called Henry's donuts OMG they have the best maple bars on the planet and those are just the start. And In New Mexico T.J.Cinnamons has the greatest pecans sticky buns. I once had them fed-ex to Hawaii over night! Yes that good!

Hi, don't know much about donuts sadly, it's not really part of tradition in France... You can get them in some supermarkets but honestly, I never dared trying because I'm sure they're nothing compared to those one can get in the US, let alone those that you describe...
Sunday mornings are made of freshly pressed orange juice, coffee and "croissants"... I'd love to try the donut version of a Sunday morning...
Do you think donuts can be send by mail?
Nope, just joking... Have a nice day
