From September of 2005 until we found out I was pregnant this past October her one prayer every night went, "Dear God, We really want a baby sister. Amen." That's it. Occasionally she'd pray for Uncle Little BIL in the Army. Sometimes she's pray for Aunt Princess and Baby H.T. But mostly, and daily she prayed for a baby sister.
When I found out I was pregnant, I told her and she was ecstatic! As far as she's concerned she's getting her sister and nothing will change her mind. Husband and I have tried to explain that only God knows what Baby is right now and God might decide we need another brother instead of a sister. Nope. She's having none of it. "I prayed for a sister. God knows I need a sister. He already gave me 2 brothers. God knows we need a sister because we don't have one of those." That's it. That's what you call the faith of a child. And that's what concerns me the most.
I won't say 'worry', because it's in His hands and He is perfect in His wisdom. I'll say 'concerned' because this could go one of a few ways:
- I prayed & God gave me what I want, therefore God answers prayers.
- I prayed & God gave me what I want, therefore God will give me whatever I want.
- I prayed & God didn't give me what I asked for, so He doesn't answer prayers.
This could make or break the faith of my daughter. I'm not sure how it will work out. I do want another girl, but I know I will be just as happy with another boy. What I need is the wisdom to guide BabyGirl through it regardless of the outcome.

Gotcha. that's a tough one. Some friends from church just had a baby. they wait until the baby is born to find out, and they already have 2 girls.
The older daughter is 4 and said matter-of-factly that they needed another boy because they already had enough girls in the family, and daddy needed a boy to identify with.
When the baby was born last week, it was a boy!!!! I'm sure the parents had similar concerns about their daughter's potential response, too.
a new child in the family is always a blessing. now, Baby Girl really wants a Baby Sister, but you are right, that God only knows what new Baby is right now. maybe, just maybe, once you know if Baby is a boy or a girl, little by little, you could prepare Baby Sister. i am sure, though, that no matter what, once Baby is born, Baby Sister will just melt with love and joy, and welcome the new child.
that has not been my problem, though, i have a fair spread of 4 boys and 3 girls. what joy! will pray for you all!
Maybe you can say to her " okay sweetheart God is sending us a wonderful present and I'm hoping we can all be grateful for what ever He wants to send us?"
One of my friends had her little girl write a welcome home letter to the baby a few months befor the baby was going to be there...it read "hi, welcome home you should be good or I will take you back to the baby store" but when the baby got there she said " okay you can stay even if YOUR NOT what I asked for , but I loved mommy first I'll show you how, ok?" What five year old says! So maybe you can try that? What a challenge you have.
