For anyone who doesn't know, my cousin Inkling had her baby late last Wednesday. She & Henry David have been calling him 'Grasshopper' since shortly after they discovered she was pregnant. The rest of us followed suit. They knew he was going to be a boy, but wanted something to remain a surprise for when he was born, so they kept his actual name a secret.
Aunt D (Inkling's mom) called me at about 2:15 in the morning on Thursday to give me the news. I knew Inkling had been in labor for a long while & was a bit worried, so the call was a welcome awakening. She told me Grasshopper's full name (here after referred to as 'Jet' for the purpose of this story...not his actual name), weight, length, and time of arrival & I stumbled back to bed.
The next morning while they were eating breakfast, I told the kids about Grasshopper's birth. "Inkling had Baby Grasshopper last night! His name is Jet." B.B. paused & said, "So, is he a grasshopper?"
I said, "No Honey, Jet's a baby."
"A real baby?"
"Yes Bud. A real baby."
"So, does he live down in the dirt?"
"No. He lives with his mommy and daddy."
"So he's a human baby?"
"Yes B.B. A human baby."
"oh."
He was completely unimpressed. Yesterday he said, "I thought they were having a grasshopper." How cool would it be for a 4 year old to have a bug for a cousin?! He is rather disappointed right now.
Although I think labor & delivery might have been much easier on Inkling had she actually given birth to a grasshopper.

Oh you just ruined all his hopes and dreams!
And I actually love the name Jet. We considered the Albanian name Jetmir for one of our boys. I said we could call him Jet, but it's actually pronounced "Yet-meer" so we went with something else.
Funny!
When my younger son was 4 and would get upset with something I did, I'd tell him he'd have to trade me in for another model at the "Mom Store" - much to my chagrin months later he asked when we were going there so he could trade me in, And worse was VERY disappointed I made it up and it wasn't real!
That's so funny. The really weird thing is that the last time I read Inkling's blog she was babysitting but not pregnant. How time flies. Congratulate her for me.
How disappointing! Not a grasshopper????
Glad family is well and enjoying new baby.
:) that's a great story for when Jet gets older :D
I can just see his little crestfallen face now...poor little fella! Can't wait to see the pictures of Jet...I bet he's an adorable little guy!
