We're having chili for lunch today. It has fanned the flames of an on going debate Husband & I have about chili. My question for you is, how do you eat your chili? For those of you who think you'll be witty & say, "With a spoon," that is not what I mean.
I like my chili topped with sour cream or shredded cheese. I also want either a grilled cheese sandwich or a big piece of corn bread to go with it. I know there are many options for chili sides/toppings: hot dogs, pb&j, saltines, Cheez-its, Ritz, even hash browns (think Waffle House) and spaghetti (think Steak 'n Shake). I do believe Husband's immediate family has the strangest chili addition I've ever encountered. They put vanilla ice cream in their chili. On the occasion that there is no vanilla ice cream left, I've seen FIL put Neapolitan ice cream in it.
Personally I think this is odd. Husband argues that it is no different than my sour cream in chili. So, what do you put on your chili?

Wow. I have trouble with the chili over spaghetti thing that the inlaws do... you can imagine how I feel about chili and icecream... that's like mixing species. It is just wrong.
I'm wiht you. Chili and cheese with fritos, cornbread or crackers on the side. And as far as that strange chili and spaghetti thing goes... I have informed J that we shall never eat it that way in our family because it is just wrong.. he's okay with that because he doesn't like chili anyway.
Ice cream ??!! I've never heard of that. I put Creme fraiche in mine. Same as sour cream I suppose, and sometimes a salsa made with tomatoes, onions, avocado and coriander. Yum! S
Corn bread... Or Fritos. But I never have Fritos, so maybe a nice tortilla chip might be a reasonable substitute. Corn bread is a must though.
I personlly add a little cinnamon, sugar, and then put cream cheese on ritz crackers, toss into bowl of chili, and break into pieces! Yum! Oh yeah, also throw in a handfull of cheddar and let it melt!!
Ice cream is definitly wierd, but worth a try!
Zann, you have obviously never lived anywhere near Ohio... the capital of Skyline Chili, where spaghetti and chili reign supreme!
I've done chili dogs, I've done chili with cheese, chili with sour cream, chili with parmessian cheese, and even chili cheese fries, but NEVER Icecream Chili..Ewwwwwww Gross!!!
Chili dogs, chili burgers, chili on my nachos, chili w sour cream, cheddar cheese, often over rice, or with tortillas, or tortilla chips, fritos, with cornbread...but I've never heard of it with ice cream...but isn't this the same family that has a Mom who makes lasagna with KETCHUP!?!?!?!?!?
I was trying to be all "open-minded" and politically correct. I was going to say, "People are different, let's embrace the differences."
However, ice cream on chili is odd.
Um... I like the sour cream and cheese in it. But we don't often have chili because hubby doesn't like beans.
Ice cream in chili is a new one to me. Not sure the sweetness would work. But then again, they put hot sauce on coconut in Mexico. Not that I liked it, but it's done.
Grace stole mine!!!
I personlly add a little cinnamon, sugar, and then put cream cheese on ritz crackers, toss into bowl of chili, and break into pieces!
must come from southern roots!
my grandma used to soak the thanxgiving turkey in coca-cola, cranberry juice, and brown sugar.
the list could go on with her genius in cooking.
food with soul!
(think Waffle House)
man, i haven't thought about a waffle house in 10 years!!!
they don't have them out here!
now i'm homesick!
Just cheese please and maybe some saltines if you got 'em. My sister puts BBQ sauce in. Not bad.
ice cream?
on chili?
no thanks!
i can't begin to imagine that!!
Look at all the horizons he is wxpanding! You know wvwryone-even those who think it gross- will have to try it just once! I personally will! I'll keep my sour cream and cheese ready just in case, though!
Gross! I think I'm gonna puke. I think the chili should be able to stand on it's own two feet. I only add some crushed up crackers and a little bit of cheese. Other than that, it's all chili baby! And it had better have spaghetti in it!!
I love mine with Buttered crackers and cheese, but they are on the side.
Occassionally I put dill pickles chips in mine.
I am finding the ice cream odd too.
I've never heard of anything in or on chili! My husband thought I was strange the first time I made it and put it over rice. He likes chili in a bowl, the end. I like white rice with chili on top. Cornbread on the side if I'm special. Now that I'm thinking it over though, that whole sour cream and cheese business sounds pretty good. Ice cream is weird. But maybe it tastes good?
