My crowning glory

Those of you who voted for me to either not cut my hair , or at least wait to do so, you've gotten your wish. I am very upset at the moment. I googled Locks of Love Cut Day this morning to find out when their annual hair drive is (the did a segment on the Today Show this spring). The results of that search included this link: Locks of Love is a Scam. I was curious, so I read it.

The comments from it lead me to another site called Charity Navigator. I will admit, most of that was Greek to me as I'm not a numbers person in the slightest, but LOL did get high ratings. But, in the side bar of that page was yet another link to the blog of the CEO of Charity Navigator Trent Stamp. It was this article that really bothered me.

The New York Times seems to have started the buzz with this article, including the following quote from the head of LOL:

"We created this monster because people get so much from it,” said Madonna Coffman, the president of Locks of Love. “They get the attention. They get a warm and fuzzy feeling. They feel they’re going to help a child.”

I have a serious problem donating the hair I've been growing for so long to see it helping to feed a "monster." I don't have a problem knowing that my hair was sold to defray costs or used to make a hair piece for a child, but I do have a problem knowing it lined the bottom of a dumpster in Florida.

I'm also not keen on the idea of charging a child's family for a hair piece, or the fact that LOL has given away only 2,000 or so wigs since their foundation. I do realize they donate a great deal of money to research, but my primary reason to donate is to help a child now. Rack it up to instant gratification if you like.

So for the time being, and until I find a reputable charity that will put my favorite accessory to good use, my locks will remain my crowning glory. But I do thank you all for your input and advice.

On a side, yet related note, one of the reasons I was so antsy to cut it was because I was about 36 hours post shower and it was dirty & greasy. I was sick of dirty hair and tired of pony tails. Since then I've realized that the dirty hair is unavoidable at the moment as daily showers are not easy to come by, and the pony tail is also a necessary evil to keep it out of the way. That's when it occurred to me that long dirty hair is less noticeable than short dirty hair...at least for me. Besides, I don't need a Little Women moment.

Amy: Jo, how could you, your one beauty!

i'm glad to hear you are not cutting your hair.

all those haters that were tell'n you to cut it were just jealous anyway and trying to get you down on their level.

don't thank me for pointing that out, i know you are thankful to have a friend like me that has super powers that can see through the BS of humanity.

yup, that's me, Mr. Discernment.

now that's out of the way, where are my humble cookies at...

Skaught, has anyone ever told you you're just not right?

Maybe I'll grab my husband's clippers and do what you suggested last week!

this makes me mad...the whole point of ANYONE I know who's donated to LOL was so that their hair could be made into a wig and given to someone who needs it...I don't think anyone, especially my 10 year old niece who's donated to them 5 times since her 5th birthday, would ever think, "gosh, I hope my hair gets sold and that can pay for someone to sit at a desk and send out an invitation to an expensive fundraiser dinner".
What a crock.

I'm so glad that you looked before you cut...but still think you'll do JUST FINE with short hair again...you know me...I wouldn't lie about this

OK the LOL thing stinks big time! Now, I think you are SO smart not to cut your hair! I hate my short hair! I regret cutting it all off! I wish I had a time machine so I could go back and change my mind!
Yes I know it is "just" hair! But I feel like an old lady with my short hair. Not to mention it always looks dirty and greasy now! OK that's all I am going to boo hoo about. I have missed reading your blog so maybe now I can get caught up :)
