Book Meme

Hardback or trade paperback or mass market paperback? I'll take what I can get. I like hardback because they hold up to me & the kids better, but I'll take paperback.

Amazon or brick and mortar? Brick & Mortar all the way. I want to hold it in my hands before I buy...and I love the smell of books.

Barnes & Noble or Borders? Have to say B & N. I've never been in a Borders. There was another Big one back when I was in college...I loved it, but can't remember the name. My folks might.

Bookmark or dogear? Bookmark!!! I hate folded up pages. Pet Peeve.

Alphabetize by author or alphabetize by title or random? I'm more visually inclined. If I have a group by the same author I'll stick them together. Otherwise, I'm all about how they look on a shelf.

Keep, throw away, or sell? Most I keep. I like to re-read if it was good the first time around. If I'm not interested in keeping them, I tend to donated books to the library. If it's really bad, I'll toss it.

Keep dustjacket or toss it? Keep...if I can find them.

Read with dustjacket or remove it? Depends. Some I stash away in a safe place, some I leave on. Mostly I leave them.

Short story or novel? Novel generally. I'll read short stories, but I want something that's going to last.

Collection (short stories by same author) or anthology (short stories by different authors)? Either or.

Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket? Never read Lemony Snicket (want to), have issues with Harry Potter & the witch craft...major issues. But I have read the first 4 H.P. books (long ago) to see what the hype was about.

Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks? I like to make it to chapter breaks, but on occasion I'll realize I don't remember the last 2 paragraphs so it's time to call it a night.

"It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”? Once upon a time...definitely!!!

Buy or Borrow? Anyway I can get them. I like to buy, but that can get 'spensive. Mama has quite the collection, so I tend to borrow alot from her...and Art is starting her own book library. I intend to take advantage of it.

New or used? Matters not to me. I like new, but if used is in good shape...it's a heck of a lot cheaper! I bought The Poisonwood Bible for $3 last month.

Buying choice: book reviews, recommendation or browse? Honestly? This may sound fantastically shallow, but if I like the cover I'm 10x more inclined to pick it up and check it out. I do read on recommendation, but I love a pretty book.

Tidy ending or cliffhanger? If it's a series, I can handle the cliffhanger. Otherwise, tidy it up for me please.

Morning reading, afternoon reading or nighttime reading? All Day Long...stopping only to eat and feed children.

Stand-alone or series? Like them both...but I'd prefer the series to be complete before I start reading (especially if it's a cliffhanger kind of thing). But don't make them too long (think Left Behind).

Favorite series? Narnia, Little House (beats the show hands down), Mitford, Lord of the Rings, Xanth, Francis Rivers books on the women in the genealogy of Christ, Junie B. Jones, should I keep going?

Favorite children’s book? See list above & add Guess How Much I Love You, You are Special, I Love you, Stinky Feet, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Uncle Remus, The Borrowers, the Gigi & Will books, anything by Beatrix Potter...I could keep going with this one too.

Favorite book of which nobody else has heard? That's a tough one...I like classics, so most of mine are fairly well known.

Favorite books read in the last year? If you only count new reads, hmmm...Probably Wicked or The Fall of Lucifer. Both were unexpected, thought provoking, and engrossing. Oh, and Wuthering Heights (how did I not read this before?).

Favorite books of all time? Ready for another list? Gone With the Wind (read no less than 5 times), Pride and Prejudice (at least once a year), Jane Eyre (at least once a year), To Kill a Mockingbird (need a new copy), Lord of the Rings trilogy, this is when you might want to check the list on my profile...

Least favorite book you finished last year? Master of the Game by Sydney Sheldon. My first Sheldon book, and probably my last. Not really big on sexual sadism...liked it up until then.

What are you reading right now? All Creatures Great and Small, The Five Love Languages of Children, and Sense & Sensibility.

What are you reading next? Mansfield Park or How Green was my Valley.

Favorite Authors? Jane Austen (kind of obvious), Pat Conroy, Shel Silverstein, Francine Rivers, Piers Anthony, C.S. Lewis, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Tolkien, Tommy Tenney.

Anything you want to read in the near future? Someone wrote a series of books about Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet's life after P & P... I want to read them, but I'm scared that I'll hate them and it will ruin some of the magic for me. I also want to read The Mayor of Casterburyby Thomas Hardy.

Any suggestions?

Much thanks to Kim for the Meme. I added a few questions...couldn't help it. It's a long one, but I love books.
