Our Bonpas Baby

I'm going to write this post, down load this picture, and publish the whole thing if it's the last thing I do!!! I'm a tad frustrated at the moment, if you can tell. My connection isn't the greatest tonight, and I'm paying for it.

At anyrate...I'd like you to meet Bonpas. She's Husband's Christmas present, an 8 week old brindle Great Dane pup. We got her today from The Great Dane Lady (the same breeder we got Luke from this spring). Husband has been looking for a brindle dane since we got Dagmar. When we bought Luke from TGDL she had just brought home a beautiful brindle named Carmen. Husband was intrigued by Carmen and started looking for one again. He drove an hour and a half to look at a pup last spring. When he got there, he discovered she was a little ill looking and had a big bald spot on her head from the ear cropping tape.

Early in November he saw TGDL had an add in the paper to pre-order Carmen's pups. We emailed her to ask about them, but never heard back. A few weeks later he saw an add saying the pups would be ready soon. Another email & no answer. I assumed they were all gone. Last night he called me from work to say she had another add & had cut her price nearly in half. This time I called her.

TGDL was thrilled to hear from us. She had one pup left and 3 couples who wanted her. She gave us first dibs since she knew us and had already sent one of her pups home with us. One couple called 3 more times after I said we'd take her. TGDL said she'd much rather us have her.

We picked her up this afternoon and brought her home. She's been kennel trained by TGDL so we've got her inside at the moment. She's about the same size as Lilly and since Lilly's been living in the kennel we got for Luke and Aurora, there's plenty of room to share. They get along very well. They've romped and played and wrestled all afternoon. Even Andrew seems content to have Bonpas around (and he's not big on new pets). Bonpas has to stop playing every so often to get loved on by one of the kids.

She's quiet and gentle and good natured, but if things get out of hand (or if I can't handle 3 dogs, 3 kids, and being pregnant) Husband has set up a nice little playpen in the shed for her complete with heat lamps. So far, so good. I'm hoping it stays that way...especially with a cold snap coming tonight.

For those of you not familiar with this area, Bonpas is a local name. I've been told that it's French for 'easy going,' but I plan on looking into that. Baby Girl was furious that we didn't name her Jasmine, but I think she may be settling into her fate.

Farmwife, she's absolutely beautiful. Aren't big dogs fun? Yours beat mine in the "big dog" category though. Scarey considering mine weighs around 130 right now.

Congrats on the new baby in the family! She looks adorable. I'm still trying to figure out how to pronounce her name though..LOL...

What a cutie. I'm guessing it's pronounced something like "bone-pah"? (If I remember correctly from my 1 semester of French, the ending consonants are silent half the time. Drove me nuts after studying very phonetical Spanish for years.)

You've pretty well got it, Lauren. Around here it comes out Bum-paw, but I think yours is closer to actual.

Brando, yes, we still have Luke & Aurora. They're huge. I've been trying to post a pic, but things are on the fritz tonight.

Lauren does have the pronunciation right, to the best of my knowledge. Now, I do remember a little French, enough to know that "bon" means "good" and "pas" usually means "not," and with correct French conjugation, "not good" should translate to "bonpas," but there could be something I'm forgetting....anyway, it's French, so it's a pretty name no matter what it means!
