I Walked the Line

Husband and I watched Walk the Line. I know we're a few months behind most folks (we don't go to the movies so we have to wait for the DVD), but I really liked it. It was sad. I can't say I knew anything about Johnny Cash prior to the film. I hope the rest of his life was better than the early years.

It took us almost eight hours to watch. That is ridiculous. I put it in right after church thinking Husband was going to go out and do chores. The boys were napping, Baby Girl was playing in her room. I thought I was in the clear. I was sadly mistaken. Husband had started a fire in the fireplace and started watching with me. That was ok, he doesn't make me pause the movie every 10 minutes to bring him a sippy cup or take him potty.

About half way through, Husband's Uncle E called. They had brought some cousins home from church and the boys wanted to come see the livestock. The boys live in town...Sort of, the town has a population of under 300. And the boys have a goose in a dog pen in their yard, so it's not exactly the "big city"...And they don't spend much time around farm animals. They're fascinated by our critters. They want to ride our horse (which pretty much terrified them the first time they did), feed the pigs, and gather eggs. So we paused the movie and gave them the ten cent grand tour.

Since we were already at it, Husband started doing his chores. When Uncle E left he took my whole brood with him. Suddenly I was left with no husband, no children and 2 sleeping puppies. What to do? What to do? Oh, yeah, I can watch my movie! Nope, MIL calls and wants to know if I can show her how to send an e-mail to Little BIL in the Army. She and SIL come over and spend 30 minutes arguing under their breaths about how and what to write (that's a can of worms I will not open here. This site will be free of the trials and tribulations of my in-laws. I'd have to have a whole different page devoted just to that and even then it could take up too much of my life). As much as I wanted to ignore them and watch the move it didn't really work. The computer sets right next to the TV, and they are pretty hard to ignore.

They finished and left so I skipped back to what I had missed and started watching again. I wasn't 5 minutes back into it when MIL came back and wanted to look up some stuff on line about Little BIL's AIT graduation. That was a hands on project because she knows very little about the internet. We couldn't find anything she needed so that was a waste of time.

Then I decided the kids had been left at Uncle E's house long enough. Sunday's at their house are always crowded. They're a family of 6. Aunt C and her girls always spend the day with them, and they had the afore mentioned boys as well. Add in my brood and that makes 14 people at their house. Add in cookie baking, playing Jungle Book with my kids, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas on the TV in the basement, and things get a little hectic. It took a good 30 minutes to round up the kids and convince them they couldn't move in with Uncle E and his family.

When we got home Husband was ready to finish the movie. We had just settled down to watch when the phone rang. It was Little BIL calling from AIT. I talked to him for about 10 minutes and then passed the phone on to Husband. Now you should know that Husband would rather eat glass than talk on the phone. When we were dating we only talked once in a blue moon. He'd rather drive the 45 minutes to my house than talk on the phone. Little BIL is pretty home sick and is facing an 18 month stint overseas as soon as he graduates from AIT. He can talk your ear off when he calls home, and he did. He told Husband all about his cooking classes and work outs and what not. I think they (they meaning Little BIL) talked for over an hour.

Once that was over we spent 20 minutes arguing with the kids over who's turn it was to pick out a video, another 20 cleaning the Guinea Pig cage, and 10 letting puppies out. We did finally get to finish the movie...Or at least Husband did. I had to clean pizza off the floor, settle the debate about who put it there in the first place, and then have a long discussion with Baby Girl about lying. Some day I'm going to go to the movies with my husband and watch a grown up movie all the way through with out having to settle any major conflicts! Of course my kids may be in graduate school by then, but a gal can dream can't she?

Inevitably, when I sit down to watch a "grown up" movie, I wait til after the girls are in bed. I curl up on the couch and get comfy to watch the flick... And 9 times out of 10, by the time the movie is three-quarters of the way through, I've fallen asleep on the couch with drool puddling up in the corner of my mouth and NO IDEA how the movie ends.

Such is life.I have a huge list of movies I want to rent - including "Walk the Line".

So, was it well worth the struggle? Think Reese deserved the Oscar win?

There are few movies hubby and I can enjoy together, but I think Walk the Line will be one.

I sure wish you lived next door. I would bring my boys over, do arts/crafts/games/puzzles/videos with your brood and even take the pups out so you and Hubby could take in a grown up movie. (Of course I can't remember the last one we saw!)

It was well worth the trouble. And I loved Reese! She should always win Oscars...except maybe for Legally Blond 2...Ugh! How could she?

It is a great movie.

My wife and I were discussing this morning why anyone actually bothers to go to the movies any more instead of just watch them on DVD at home. I guess your post is a good answer.

oh no, the IL's found out they can access the internet at your house? Maybe you should tell them you have bird flu and are quarantined from the driveway on up.....
